Bone is living tissue — constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Until about age 30, we build more bone than we lose. After 30, the balance shifts. After menopause, it shifts dramatically.
Estrogen plays a critical role in protecting bone density. When estrogen drops at menopause, bone loss accelerates — sometimes by 3–5% per year in the first five years after menopause. This is why osteoporosis is so much more common in women than men.
By the time a fracture happens, significant bone loss has already occurred. The spine, hip, and wrist are the most common fracture sites — and a hip fracture in an older woman carries serious health consequences.
